I’ve got to admit that I’m a sucker for any system with a libero and Henrik has made this position the cornerstone of his tactical setup. Interestingly the system is based on strong triangles both at the defensive end and the attacking end of the pitch. The libero and two centrebacks should provide defensive stability whilst in attack the presence of two strikers and a player in the attacking midfield slot should ensure that we carry a constant threat in attack.

The first Tactical Review that I’ve written for FM13. If there are any of you that would like your tactics analysed in this fashion then drop me a message on twitter and I’ll get it sorted out.

The good news is that we’re starting with something interesting. I always like taking a look at other peoples asymmetric tactics purely because it gives an insight in to how they play the game and where they believe they can maximise their tactical strengths. The staggered left side is interesting as Jack seems to have decided to compensate or the lack of a wide midfielder by playing a midfielder in the left defensive midfield shot. This will add instant depth to any attacking or defensive phase and it should be interesting to see how it all works.

The most striking aspect of the initial setup is that it seems to be primarily defensive in shape. A back four shielded by three defensive midfield players, two of which are set as defensive midfielders in their roles. What isn’t apparent from a first glance is that the three man curtain at the base of midfield is actually an excellent tool to help maintain possession. The fullbacks are both set to attack so the idea is obviously that they are able to offer a degree of width with the two inside forwards ahead of them cutting inside at will.

Something genuinely interesting here. Dr Poods ( I really can’t get used to that username) has set up with a traditional sweeper system, the reason I say traditional is that  a lot of people still confuse the sweeper and libero role. A libero is more of an attacking option looking to bring the ball out of defence and start the attack, a sweeper on the other hand is meant to sit behind the central defenders and ‘sweep’ looking to move laterally left and right to whichever side the opposition are attacking, If any of you saw the Community Shield match between Manchester City and Chelsea the Belgian Vincent Kompany performed the sweeper role drawing on his anticipation, pace and power to negate the initial phase of Chelsea attacks. That said the sweeper role tends to be one of the hardest to get right in the Football Manager match engine.

A genuinely interesting shape that is based albeit loosely on a 3-4-3 shape. By using an anchorman in front of the defence Sam is essentially giving himself a defensive triangle which should be extremely strong centrally. In the attack the lone striker will be ably supported by the wingers and two central midfielders to create overloads and angles. More

The most striking aspect of the setup is the midfield balance. With two playmakers around the same zone – albeit one deep and one advanced – it is entirely possible that the game could get congested in the centre. Whether that’s the way the analysis plays out though remains to be seen.

First of all apologies for the relative lack of articles of late. It’s been an extremely busy month but as we are coming into May soon my productivity should increase – I hope!

A relatively straightforward 4-3-3 system that at first glance seems to offer balance in both attack and defence. When I started to analyse the matches played though it became apparent that the tactic is a little too attacking leading to defensive frailties.
